If Apple does indeed launch some kind of tablet device in about two weeks, I have to say this concept by Tim Van Damme makes the by far most sense for very many reasons. If Apple simply releases a standalone tablet, I would personally have very little reason to even consider buying one. While I’m certainly one of those people who drool at most of the stuff Apple makes, I simply wouldn’t have (enough) use of it a standalone tablet.
A hybrid laptop/tablet like this though would be far more useful and certainly something I’d consider as my next computer. The full functionality of a laptop combined with a more portable touchscreen tablet device (that potentially could be docked any other laptop/desktop) would definitely get me very interested. A hybrid like this would also be something Apple could sell at a premium price, whereas a standalone tablet couldn’t possibly cost as much or more than a $1000 MacBook, so even from a strictly business standpoint a hybrid would make a lot more sense for Apple to release.
Whatever Apple has come up with and announce in two weeks, whether it’s a tablet, a hybrid or something completely different, I’m sure it’ll be cool. I’ll be rooting for it to be something like this concept though, because nothing else would make as much sense as this would.
This is what I was thinking too. However, Lenovo already had showcased this hybrid idea at CES 2010. (link) And I hear that they’re going to be in the market VERY soon. Not that imitating design concept would be a problem for Apple, since they always manage to surprise us with something innovative. I can’t wait!
